Painkiller

It’s lonely in this city
Though the streets are filled with men
Asleep with empty bottles in their hands.
But there’s someone I can turn to
When I’ve nearly reached the end,
And everything I say she understands.

She’s a pain killer, pain killer.
She makes me feel all right.
She’s a pain killer, pain killer.
Just one dose can get me through the night.

Our dreams could not be broken.
Our hopes were shatterproof,
Till someone aimed a cannon at the mirror.
So now when I’m in darkness,
I make my way to her,
And she can make those shadows disappear.

She’s a pain killer, pain killer.
She makes me feel all right.
She’s a pain killer, pain killer.
Just one dose can get me through the night.

And when I can’t walk,
And I can’t stand the shock,
She’s a solid rock.
She’s a solid rock.
And when I’m torn apart,
And afraid to start,
She gives me heart.
She gives me heart.

When you look beneath the surface,
The corruption hurts your eyes.
Oh where are all the heroes of my youth?
But there’s one place of refuge,
And I go there more and more,
Cause I don’t have to ask her for the truth.

She’s a pain killer, pain killer.
She makes me feel all right.
She’s a pain killer, pain killer.
Just one dose can get me through the night.
