The End of Something
We once ruled this water,
Under calico skies,
Casting their imprimatur
That true love never dies.
Now the log mill’s in ruins,
Like a castle of yore.
When I ask, “What’s the matter?”
You say, “Love isn’t fun anymore.”
You taught me to ramble,
How to shoot, how to fish.
How to dance, how to gambol.
Am I not all you wish?
Now your mouth at the corners
Doesn’t grin like before.
Only words you provide me
Are “Love isn’t fun anymore.”
I’ll remember those times
When everything rhymes
With the stars over Charlevoix Lake.
We laughed in the wind,
Felt the universe bend,
But I guess it was time to awake.
Didn’t I aim to please you?
Can you say I complained?
Wasn’t I there to ease you,
When I found you in pain?
Now as Venus is hiding,
And the waves lick the shore.
Throw your heart in the fire.
Tell me love isn’t fun anymore.
That poor boy has been waiting
For the moment I’m gone.
It must be so frustrating.
You’d just like to get on.
So I’ll row myself homeward,
Return the veil to the store,
Give a brief explanation.
I’ll say love isn’t fun anymore.
I’ll remember those nights
Beneath northern lights,
Like blueberries floating in cream.
Watch a great heron fly
With the moon in his eye,
But some things are not what they seem.
I do hope you’re contented,
Maybe we can be friends.
You do seem so fragmented.
Love is sweet till it ends.
Head on back to Petoskey.
Hang a sign on the door,
Carve the words in plain English,
“Love isn’t fun anymore.”
