Bridge to Beyond
You’re declining, smoked and smitten,
Regretting verses you've left unwritten
To be forgiven in the living before you’re gone.
While you are whispering, softly sighing,
She will be listening to all your crying.
She surely knows you as you grow close to the bridge to beyond
In the dimness of the primordium,
Some would argue we lost our freedom
When we crawled out from the slime of Darwin’s pond.
Gods and angels spun around us
Lost and aimless until they found us
And pushed us closer to crossing over the bridge to beyond
When there's gunshots in the night
You reach out for the light
And you discover that your mother's long gone
On this trailway through ancient hollows
We look behind us where trouble follows
Seeking shelter like a homeless vagabond
You shake and shiver, so here’s a sweater
Just drink some whiskey and you’ll feel better
Don’t fret the loss as you walk across the bridge to beyond
